Mystery on Super8
“TAPE: Unveil the Memories” presents us with an intriguing mystery from the very beginning, which we’ll have to unravel throughout the adventure using two main mechanics:
Developed by “Black Chili Goat”, which, despite being a small and inexperienced team, has created an entertaining game with an appropriate length.
An ambitious idea, but overall an enjoyable one.
A game that feels personal and includes many funny references: El Priorato del Crimen, NISU, El Grillo…
The sound design and atmosphere have Silent Hill-esque touches. Every time Iria, the protagonist, reads a note, the music is different for many of them.
I liked the mechanic of messages that can only be seen through the camera.
I enjoyed the mix of 3D and real images/videos. Even though it’s a risky approach, it turned out well. It brought me back to those ’90s games like “7th Guest” or “Phantasmagoria”.
The camera mechanic is novel, but not very fun. Having to search for wooden horses or other objects to charge the camera is a bit tedious (especially in the house level).
Although some puzzles are interesting, like the one involving rotating floors, in general they are too simple and not very innovative (placing objects in order or collecting a certain number of items).
The animation when using the camera is a bit slow.
Some stealth sections are more tedious than challenging, for example when you have to go back and forth in the same area just to recharge the camera.
Overall, the stealth system is too slow and becomes tiresome.
The background-color of the L in the inventory UI is transparent and blends with the background colors.
